Considering purchasing health insurance for your pet? Read Chapter Six, Financial Commitments, in Dr. Nakaya's book on making health decisions on behalf of animal companions. It is a comprehensive discussion of the financial aspects of pet care, including but not limited to pet health insurance. Dr. Nakaya recommends a savings acount as an alternative or compliment to insurance.

Trends Magazine (American Animal Hospital Association), March/April 2007 issue, pages 35-43 compared 9 different pet insurance plans: Embrace Pet Insurance, The Hartville Group, PetFirst Healthcare, Pethealth Inc., Pet Partners Inc., Petplan Insurance, Pets Best Insurance, Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI) and Vetinsurance Ltd. in an article titled "A Guide to Pet Insurance" by Jennifer Merchant Sullivan. Unfortunately, this article is not available from the Trends Magazine web site directly. Request it on interlibrary loan at your local library.

Comparison of Insurance Plans: PetInsuranceReview.com compares and update information on 9 plans in the U.S. and 3 in Canada. Includes reviews by customers.

CareCredit is another financing option that can be used with or without insurance.

  • The Merck / Merial Manual for Pet Health home edition edited by Cynthia Kahn and Scott Line The 1345 page manual, based on the Merck Veterinary Manual (http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/index.jsp) , covers dogs, cats, and horses (chapters 1-57) plus birds, exotic pets and 10 special subjects chapter 58-85). A majority of the 200 plus contributors are veterinary faculty; the rest are private practitioners or are in government or non-government organizations. The list of contributors includes the section written by each; however, none of the articles/chapters are attributed to a particular contributor. Includes glossary, index, reader's guide.
