Reference Services
There are many ways to seek reference services at UT Libraries.
- In person: Visit Reference Services on the first floor of Hodges Library, or ask for assistance at the Agriculture & Veterinary Medicine Branch Library.
- By phone: Call (865) 974-4171 for the Hodges (Main) Library,
or (865) 974-7338 for telephone reference service at the Agriculture
& Veterinary Medicine Library.
- Via the Libraries' Web site: Ask questions of the UT librarians though AskUsNow, a link to live, interactive assistance. You can e-mail the Agriculture Library staff at agvetlib@utk.edu. Or you can use chat widget on the left of our pages.
In addition, each academic department has a subject librarian liaison who manages resources related to the discipline. Subject librarians also offer in-depth research consultation. Please see the list below at right for contact information.
Access for Remote Users
A new proxy server allows remote access to many electronic databases to which the UT Libraries subscribe. The server also allows access to electronic journals and electronic books. Authorized faculty, staff and students of the University of Tennessee Knoxville can now log-in using their NetID and password.
Net ID and Password
UT information on NetID and Password
Your NetID is the "name" part of your University email address "name@utk.edu". If you don't know your University email address, search for yourself in the UT Online Directory.
Your email address will be displayed. To remotely access the Libraries' electronic databases, your campus must be listed as "Knoxville," regardless of your actual location. If you need help with this step, contact a reference librarian at (865) 974-7338, email us, or you can use chat widget on the left of our pages.
By default you have a NetID password composed of the following three pieces of information:
- The first two letters of your birth month in lower case.
- The last two digits of your birth year.
- The last four digits of your UT ID Number.
For example, if you were born February 1979 and your UT ID Number is 123-45-6789 then your default password would be fe796789.
Note: The default password allows you to gain initial access to password protected facilities. Since it is composed of personal information that could be guessed, it is relatively insecure and should not be used as your permanent password. You should change this password to something more private as soon as possible. You can change your NetID password online anytime by logging in to UT Online Directory and clicking the change password link.
UT Libraries' Catalog
Connect to the UT Libraries' online catalog
Free access to the University Libraries online catalog is provided via the World Wide Web. The Library Catalog provides call number, location(s) and circulation status (checked in or checked out) for library materials. For UT patrons, the "My Account" feature in the new online catalog will alow you to see what you have checked out, renew materials, and place holds online. Please contact the library if you are having difficulties searching or checking your library record.
Databases and Electronic Resources
The UT Libraries provide access to over 200 databases that have been sorted by topic. While some databases provide full text of articles, most databases yield citations and abstracts to journal articles and other literature from many subject fields. Many of the Libraries' databases are available to remote users after they log-in with their NetID and password. A few are available only at workstations within the library. Note the link to off-campus/remote user information.
Electronic Journals
Many journals are now available electronically in full-text. The University Libraries subscribe to many e-journals, most of which can be accessed through the Libraries webpages and the online catalog. Access is based on the authentication of the user through the use of the NetID and password.
*Access to the electronic journals and books to which the UT libraries subscribe is also available through the catalog.
Circulation
Faculty and staff have the privilege of a one-year loan period for books. To borrow materials in person, use your UT ID card. To renew items by telephone, you may call Distance Education Services toll-free: 1-877-225-0013. *In addition, the "My Account" feature in the new online catalog will alow you to see what you have checked out, renew materials, and place holds online.
