Barbara I. Dewey has been Dean of Libraries and Professor at University of Tennessee, Knoxville, since August 2000. From 1987 until 2000 she held several administrative positions at the University of Iowa Libraries including, Director of Information and Research Services and finally interim University Librarian.

Prior to her work at Iowa, she was Director of Admissions at Indiana University's School of Library and Information Science; Reference and Interlibrary Loan Librarian at Northwestern University Library; and Head, Reference and Adult Services at Minnesota Valley Regional Library in Mankato, Minnesota. She is the author or editor of five books. The most recent, Leadership, Higher Education, and the Information Age, was published in 2003.

She has published articles and presented papers on research library topics including digital libraries, technology, user education, fundraising, and human resources. She teaches occasionally in the College of Communication and Information at UT. She holds an M.A. in library science, and a B.A. in sociology/anthropology from the University of Minnesota. She also earned a Certificate in Graduate Public Management from Indiana University.

Dewey is President of the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries (ASERL), a consortia of 43 research university libraries in the southeast. She is also chair of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) Diversity Committee and is on the Board of Directors for the New Media Consortium (NMC). She is active in the Association of College and Research Libraries, Educause, the Digital Library Federation, Council on Library Resources, African Studies Association, and the Tennessee Library Association.

Locally, she is a dean representative on the Faculty Senate and member of the Faculty Senate Executive Committee. She also serves on the IT Steering Committee, the UT Press Advisory Board, the Baker Center Advisory Board, and convenes the UT system library director's bi-annual meetings. She is a member of the Rotary Club of Knoxville, an incoming board member of the Friends of Literacy, and a member of Knoxville Heritage Association.
