Off-Campus/Remote Access to Databases from the University of Tennessee Libraries

Most databases require that web browsers have the following settings:

• Accept "cookies".
• Enable Java and Javascript.

"Authorized users", i.e., currently enrolled students, faculty and staff of the University of Tennessee (Knoxville campus), may access a number of databases from off-campus. License agreements for most databases restrict off-campus/remote access to authorized users.

The list of databases features icons that represent access limitations. The UT icon and the NetID icon indicate that the database may be accessed outside of the library.

Off-Campus/Remote Access to library databases is limited by the Internet service provider of the authorized user:

• UT Enhanced Remote Access Account (Students, Faculty/Staff)
  • Allows access to the largest number of databases: those with the UT icon and the NetID icon. No additional login procedures are required.
  • Provides dial-up access to the Internet (Web) for a fee. You must use this account with a modem. It will not work on a cable modem or DSL line.
  • There is no 800-number for this service.

• Other Internet Service Provider (Cable modem, DSL Line, AOL, BellSouth, MindSpring, workstation connected to Internet at place of business, etc.)
  • Allows access only to those databases with the NetID icon.
  • Requires an ID (your NetID) and a password (your NetID password). The NetID can be found with your entry in the UT Student, Faculty and Staff Directory.
  • The ph alias and ph password from 2000-2001 are supposed to have been converted to the NetID and NetID password.
  • For problems with the NetID or NetID password, check the NetID information page or contact the HelpDesk in the Office of Information Technology.
