INFORMATION ALLIANCE MUSIC COUNTERPARTS DISCUSSION NOTES, FALL 1999

Music librarians are willing to lend audio materials to Information Alliance libraries via the IRIS delivery service. Shirley is exploring packaging options. Lending audio items should have little effect on ILL processing time at the local library. Materials would be designated for use in library for three days at the borrowing library. Librarians will work with their respective Interlibrary Loan coordinators to begin this service as soon as possible.
If lending of audio materials proceeds smoothly, music librarians will consider lending other materials types that do not normally circulate, such as complete works of composers.
Unless IRIS expands to cover journal requests through the online catalog request form, the music librarians are considering direct faxing to one another to expedite user access to the Information Alliance collections. The librarians suggest that adding an articles button to the IRIS request form be discussed at a future Information Alliance meeting.
Music librarians plan to exchange serials and periodicals lists to determine overlap, areas of specialization, and areas for future collaborative collection development.
Librarians are also exchanging demographic information, including statistics on user population, budgets, courses offered, etc.
University of Tennessee uses a blanket order plan for musical scores. Pauline will share details about the profile with Shirley and Paula. The profile could form the foundation for collaborative acquisition of scores by contemporary composers.
The music librarians advocate consortial discussions regarding the purchase of electronic materials. Because all Information Alliance libraries have subscribed to the International Index to Music Periodicals (Chadwyck Healy) through ASERL/Solinet, each will be due a refund.
