Staff at UK are comparing a gift of 124 boxes of Congressional Serial Set volumes against our collection to identify the best copy. This set consists of House and Senate Reports and Documents dating back to the 15th Congress, and includes most of the publishing done by the federal government in the nineteenth century.

These boxes were sent to us from Kansas State University at the request of Vanderbilt who had originally intended to add them to their collection since they hold the "regional" collection of this set for Tennessee. Since UK is already a regional depository, we agreed to add them to our collection for the use of all depositories in Kentucky and Tennessee. The regional depository in Tennessee, the Univ. of Memphis, has given their approval to this arrangement. We are three-quarters of the way through the boxes, so we may be able to finish our comparison work by next Spring.

As we compare the volumes, we are creating an inventory sheet for each volume that describes its condition. Once the inventory is complete, we will send copies of sheets for damaged volumes to the Univ. of Tennessee at Knoxville to see if they can provide us with better copies. We will also send them a list of our missing volumes. Currently, it is not the intention of Vanderbilt to send UK any of their Serial Set volumes. However, UK will continue to try to fill holes in this Alliance collection as we have the opportunity to do so.
