Gayle Baker welcomed the 46 participants and informed them of the change in the planning group for Alliance activities: the Executive Committee composed of Gayle Baker, Lori Goetsch, and Linda Phillips of UTK, Miko Pattie, Shawn Livingston, and Gail Kennedy of UK. Paula Kaufman, Dean of Libraries at UTK, stated that she was pleased with the progress we have made so far and that she and Aubrey Mitchell, Associate Dean, would have to leave early for Faculty Senate meeting. Paul Willis, Director of Libraries at UK, mentioned one of the accomplishments-- the Arabic collection cataloging project.
Bonnie Cox of UK and Sandy Leach of UTK reported on the Collaborative Collection Management Institute held June 13 and 14 in Lexington. The outcome of the Institute was the identification of pilot projects for resource sharing in 5 areas: hotel management, professional ethics, children's literature, technical and engineering standards, and, small alternative feminist press. Sandy mentioned the micro-opache collections project: UTK has purchased the Early American Imprints with CD index and UK is considering Landmarks of Science set. There will be a Web site built linked to the Alliance homepage. She also mentioned the interchange between Nathan Robertson, UTK Preservation Librarian, and Becky Ryder, UK Preservation Librarian.
Linda Phillips of UTK and Gail Kennedy of UK reported on the Leadership Institute held in September 5 and 6 at Pleasant Hill in Kentucky. Gail informed the group of the progress made at UK on the three identified areas: vision/mission, team training, and customer focus. Linda reported on the three for UTK: goals/mission/ organizational structure, training coordination, and new information formats.
Shawn Livingston and Miko Pattie of UK presented an introductory session on "The New Collection". " Definition"; "What is different?" "Why is it difficult?" and, "What will help?" were briefly covered. Participants added more issues to round up the discussion.
Gayle Baker and Tamara Miller reported on "Where UTK is now". External forces (budget cuts, technology fee, Infolabs...) and the selection of SilverPlatter's ERL access to large no. of journals were mentioned. The status of UTK's implementation of Horizon was also reported.
After a buffet lunch, Mary Molinaro, Bonnie Cox and Miko Pattie reported on "Where UK is now". The cross-system coordinating team, Library Systems Group, newly-installed printing system, the implementation of IAC SearchBank and Uncover SUMO, and UK's partnerships were reported.
Five-minute vignettes of the future, 2006, then were presented: Jim Hammons of UTK on access & delivery, Judy Webster of UTK on acquisitions, Richard Harwood of UTK on cataloging, Bonnie Cox and Becky Ryder of UK on collections and preservation, Kandace Rogers of UK on public services, and Mary Molinaro of UK on systems. With these visions on mind, parti- cipants divided into 6 groups to strategize and identify issues that might help in taking us there.
After short reports from group discussions, Gail Kennedy of UK facilitated the reporting of the small group sessions in which a number of potential action items were identified for consideration by the Executive Committee. Attendees were also asked to complete a meeting evaluation form. Results will be posted on the Web site.
