Information Alliance

Collection Development and Management Objectives

I. The University of Kentucky and Tennessee libraries (hereafter " the Libraries") will establish programs and projects to promote coordinated collection development and management and contain costs through cooperative purchases.

II. To that end the Libraries will exchange collection data to inform their coordination efforts, such as holdings, circulation, purchases and Conspectus information.

  1. In the event of serials cancellations, each Library will notify the other of its intent to cancel and consider the needs of both Universities when appropriate.

  2. The collection development officers will provide lists of expensive purchases (i.e., over $2,000) on a monthly basis.

  3. Collection management will share information about their universities' academic programs and strengths.

III. The free exchange of information will flow through as many media as possible (the Information Alliance listserve, telephone, e-mail, paper communications and regular meetings). Meetings will be an important forum for conceiving and assessing programs and projects.

  1. Collection development officers responsible for allocations, faculty and liaison and staff assignment will meet two times per year to target programs and monitor progress. Other staff involved in collection development will also meet as needed in the beginning, middle and conclusion of projects.

IV. The Libraries will leverage their funds to maximize purchasing power regardless of format.

  1. The Libraries will identify one or more subject areas in 1995/96 in which to initiate joint or shared purchases.

  2. During 1995/96 the Universities will allocate a set sum for shared purchase of high-cost materials in the subject areas decided upon in Number 4a.

  3. At the time that materials allocations are made, the CDOs will secure funds for the agreed joint purchases and will not discontinue these purchases without prior notification.

V. The collection development component of the Information Alliance will build on the shared resource efforts already in place (e.g. inter- library loan protocols) and promote other needed joint efforts that will facilitate coordinated collection development and management, such as linked OPAC or serials records.

VI. The CDOs will report regularly to their respective library directors and university community concerning progress and needs for the coming year.
